Today I’m bringing you some of my favorite tips on staying positive. I did one of these posts about stress earlier this month, and I got some really great responses, so I thought I’d do another!
Especially when I’m stressed out to the point of insanity (which, unfortunately, school has me at right now), it can be difficult to maintain a positive attitude about life. And honestly, so much of how you go about your daily business is affected by the way that you’re thinking. If it’s a glass half-empty mentality you’re sporting, then that’s going to change everything you do. It’s crazy how much better a day can get when you decide to look at things from a different perspective.
So when things start to get a little (or a lot) over your head, try your hand at some of these:
Do What You Love, Even if Other People Tell You Not To // Okay, I might be starting off with the cliché “follow your dreams” spiel right now, but it’s so true. As long as you aren’t hurting anyone else in the process, reach for the stars. Pick up a hobby you’ve always wanted to do. Become a dancer. Join a band. Study theoretical physics. Whatever brings you joy in this life, it’s worth pursuing, even if other people tell you it’s not. At least for me, a lot of how I feel is affected by what others say and think about my life choices. I’m working on becoming better at just focusing on how I feel, and it’s making a huge difference. Go after something that makes you happy, no matter how large or small, and it’s going to have a positive impact on your life. I recently wrote an article about this in terms of school, if you want to check it out.
No Tears Over Spilled Milk // Don’t sweat the small stuff! Guys, life is way too short to freak out when little things don’t go your way. As much as I know I try to plan everything in life, things don’t always work out. The best advice that I can give you is to just roll with whatever happens. If you stop worrying about every. single. detail. there is to worry about, you’ll have so much more time for actually enjoying your day. In the same vein, don’t let bad things ruin a good day. Spill coffee on your blouse before work? That doesn’t mean you won’t slay your presentation. It’s difficult to not get in a bad mood when little challenges like this pop up on the daily, but if you can look past them to see big-picture, you’re golden.
Get Outside // If you’re feeling overwhelmed and negative, sometimes it’s a good idea to just step outside for a while. Get away from the computer screen, pop in your headphones, and just go for a walk. Whether it’s a trip around the block or a hike down the local trail by the water, fresh air and a fresh environment can do a lot to, well, freshen your attitude. Not to mention, catching some rays from the sun will literally and figuratively brighten your day. This is one of my favorite tips for solving pretty much anything – writer’s block, stress relief, staying positive, getting exercise. Go outside, and good things are bound to happen!
Chat with Loved Ones // Sometimes the best remedy for a bad day or a bad attitude is just talking it out with someone you care about. Call your best friends at 11:00 p.m. to debate about what time it will be when daylight savings starts up again (even though it might be completely obvious). If you make time in your day to be around the people who love you for you, they’re going to give you such a confidence boost that will help you radiate positivity throughout the rest of your day. They’re going to appreciate you for the way you are, and when you surround yourself with people who make you happy, that’s going to make all the difference in your attitude. Once again, life is too short for people who only want to watch you suffer and not succeed.
